PRESIDENTS COLUMN
Well, the year is winding to an end and winter is coming. Dont let the cold weather stop you from training! Winter is a great time to develop a good base with long, slow enjoyable runs with friends. Winter is also a good time to heal nagging injuries by cross training. Its time to reflect on the past year; what has worked and what has not.
As the year comes to a close, thanks go out to all the club officers, club members and their families. Also kudos go out to the following race directors:
Reed Finlay for the VES Artic 10K; Dave Horton for the Holiday Lake 50K, the Terapin Mountain Run, and his Mountain Masochist 50 Mile Trail run; Jerome Loy for the Goode 4 Miler, and the Forest 5K as well as his hard work and support of local running; Lesley McPhatter for the Memorial Day 10K; Bret Boman for the Summer Track Series; Chris Ellis for the Virginia 10 & 4-Miler; Mary Anne Craven for the Stephenson Memorial Youth Run.
Our next club meeting is on Tuesday November 9 with guest speaker Steve Bozeman, Double Iron Man and ultra distance runner. Our December meeting will be on Tuesday 14 December. Tentative guest speakers for that meeting are Randy Bungart and Buzz Male, the cross-country and track coaches for UVA. These should be great meetings and I encourage everyone to mark it on your calendar, come out and bring a friend.
Remember to always check the Hotline 582-8000 for upcoming meetings and club information.
Happy Holidays and keep on running!

October 9, Sedalia - Terrapin Mountain ½ Marathon
The second annual Terrapin Mountain Trail Run was held at the Sedalia Center. Thirty runners started the race. All 30 finished the course. For the second consecutive year a black bear was seen on the trail. The US Forest Service is currently considering Terrapin Mountain for timber use. If you would like to see it protected and used mainly for recreation, let the Forest Service hear your views. Their address is P.O. Box 10, Natural Bridge Station, VA 24579.

October 16, Mountain Masochist 50 Mile Trail Run
The race was started exactly on time (Horton Eastern Sandard Time) for the 17th year in a row. Runners were treated like kings at the aid stations by many workers who have worked every race for 17 years. Music cheered the runners on at the start, greeted them at aid station 4, and on top of Buck Mountain. Runners had to complete this challenging 50 mile (probably closer to 52 miles) point to point course within 12 hours and not one second over. The Lynchburg Amateur Radio Club (LARC) monitored every aid station and provided vital communication. As tradition has it, Hal DeVuyst drove me from start to finish (ahead of the runners) and through some very rough places as well.
Of 196 starters thirty-six did not finish this year. Why? In most cases, it was because reality did not meet expectations. Some trained very hard, but did not finish. Some didnt train very hard and finished. For those of you who did not finish, I hope you come back and finish next October 21, 2000 for the 18th running of the "Best Trail Run in the East."
