The President’s Column

As the end of the year approaches, I would like to take the opportunity to provide a “State of the LRRC” commentary reflecting upon the club’s activities during the past year.

The extremely hard work and outstanding efforts of a large number of individuals provided for a  very enjoyable 2000 race season.  Race directors Wendy Golden, Reed Finley, David Horton, Lesley McPhatter, Brett Bowman, Jerome Loy, Gary Taylor, Mary Ann Craven, Tracy Trent, Steve Bozeman, and Tracy White all deserve a round of thunderous applause for the excellent events which they organized for the local community this year.  In particular, I am truly grateful to Mary Ann Craven for the excellent job she did with the Children’s Race.  And although these race directors deserve our gratitude, I am sure they would all agree with me when I proclaim that the deafening applause should be offered up to the many volunteers who come out and tirelessly contribute their time again and again so that those of us who compete in these events may do so in a safe and supportive environment.  Hurray to all the volunteers!  Believe me, your efforts are truly appreciated.  You make the events what they are, and we all thank you.

The LRRC hosted a number of interesting programs during the year.  George Wortley presented a program on running injuries.  Lesley McPhatter discussed nutrition.  Jim McFarlane attended LRRC monthly meetings twice to instruct those in attendance on proper massage technique.  And David Horton provided an inspirational talk on training and goal setting.  Although the club executive provided what were thought to be informative programs, the attendance at the monthly meetings continued to stagnate.  This is of genuine concern to me for two reasons.  First, it is embarrassing to invite a speaker to a club meeting and have very few members show up.  Second, clearly, the  current ways of conducting club affairs is not serving the majority of the membership.

As the LRRC approaches the end of the millenium year, I would like to re-focus on what is of value to the membership.  There are approximately 125 members in the club.  The benefits they get from LRRC membership are a bimonthly newsletter, discounts at local stores for running apparel, automatic membership in RRCA with the quarterly  subscription to Footnotes, and insurance coverage at local races under the blanket RRCA policy.  Maybe this is enough.  And if it is enough, maybe the club should reconsider the format of its monthly meetings.  For the most part, LRRC has become a race management club as opposed to a road racing club.  With this in mind, the club may be better served with a different type of monthly meeting which does not include a program.  All of these issues are open for debate and I am keen on initiating a discussion on this topic at the November meeting.  Based upon the outcome of the November meeting, the election of officers will take place at the December meeting.  If you haven’t served in any capacity with LRRC in the past, and you wish to do so, please contact me or any member of the club executive.

I look forward to seeing everyone on November 14 at Monte Carlos

Oct. 7, Lynchburg, Stephenson Memorial Youth Run

Race Director:  Mary Ann Craven

The 10th Annual Dr. John A. Stephenson Memorial Youth Run was held on Saturday, Oct, 7 in Riverside Park.  The weather was beautiful and most of the children had a great time.  Some of the toddlers weren’t quite sure what it was all about when they got to the finish line to find all these people cheering and clapping for them.  They stopped, smiled and waved back instead of crossing the line.  Close enough though for the time keeper and finish line helpers who sorted things out.

Big thanks to the Lynchburg Roadrunners who helped out this year; Louise Martin who congratulated each child with a trophy at the finish line, Vic Galan, Co-directors Matt & Teri Ripley, Lesley McPhatter, and Walter Rawl.  Special thanks to Drew Wilds who got everyone off to an inspiring start and on schedule too.

Oct. 21, Lynchburg, Mountain Masochist 50 mi. Trail Run

Race Director:  Dave Horton

The annual MMTR 50 miler took place on October 21, 2000.  With the Marine Corps Marathon scheduled the next day and the JFK 50 miler scheduled for two weeks after the MMTR, I was concerned that our number of entrants would decrease.  I was wrong, we started with 196 in 1999 and 193 in 2000.  We had perhaps the strongest men's and women's field ever.

The weekend started off on Friday night with a massive Italian buffet including 7 large pizzas, 20 lasagnas, 5 BIG tubs of spaghetti, salad, and 4 large sheetcakes.

There was much discussion about the design of this year’s T-shirt an sweatshirt.  In the middle of the shirt, was a large “50+” with the writing, “Horton Miles” in the middle of the plus!  Now what do you suppose that means?

I had predicted earlier this year that Josh Cox’s (recently running a 2:13:5 marathon) course record of 6:57 might be challenged by Courtney Campbell or Clark Zealand. But, even though it was a nice day, a higher temperature than optimal (mid 70's) and lots of slick leaves  convinced me prior to race day that a super fast time would not occur.

Courtney Campbell, running strong to the end, won his fourth MMTR in a fine time of  7:07:15.  Campbell now has 5 of the 10 fastest times ever recorded at the MMTR.  Lynchburg’s own Clark Zealand finished in second at 7:15:45 to become the nineth fastest performer ever at the MMTR.  Ian Torrence finished third with a time of 7:24:35.

Of the female racers, Janice Anderson cruised in 16th overall for her 4th victory  in four tries with a time of 8:54:36.  All four of her victories were under 9 hours.

Francesca Anderson finished second in 9:08:15.  Kathy Youngren and Rebekah Trittipoe finished in a tie for 3rd  with a time of 9:28:39.

As to the “Best Blood” award, when I saw Francesca Anderson around 23 miles, she was more excited about the cut on her knee and the blood that had run down and caked more than she was about her position.  Amy Thompson tried to claim best blood with a big blood blister on her heel ... it did look bad, but not bad enough!  However, the Best Blood Award went to the first time ultra runner Brant Tolsma of Lynchburg, VA, the track coach at Liberty University.  Brant fell before entering the tunnel and had a big gash on his right forearm that probably needed stitches.  Brant finished in a great time of 9:55:07 for 42nd place.

Terry McCray of Summerfield, FL finished for the 10th time, earning him the beautiful 10 year jacket.  The Mountain Man and Woman Awards went to Clark Zealand and Rebekah Trittipoe.  Tom Green finished for the 18th time, the only runner to have run and finished all 18 MMTR’s.

In 2001, the Holiday Lake 50K will be held on February 17th.  We are also starting a tough new 50K called the “Promise Land 50K” on April 28th.

The 2001 MMTR will be held on October 20th next year.  Theses three races will be called the Lynchburg Ultra Series (L.U.S.).  Runners who complete all three races will be eligible for special awards to be given out at the 2001 MMTR.

See y’all at the Races!!!!!

Oct. 22, Washington, D.C., Marine Corps Marathon

25th Marine Corps Marathon

By Steve Bozeman

I lined up at front of MCM and was suprised to see John Billingslea behind me.  Didn't know he was training for this.  Looked like a small crowd from Lynchburg this year.  The Washington Post’s “Marine Corps Marathon  Hall of Fame” ceremony was really exciting.  I was inducted with some pretty big names - namely past Secretary of the Navy, and retired Marine, "Bull" Middendorf who actually first thought of the idea of putting on this marathon.  In addition, the only male and female Marines to win the race and of course Ken Carnes (wheelchair) who won about seven Marine Corps Marathons.

Debbie did excellent at MCM, with a time of 3:55.  I ran 4:09 with “The Colors”.  The same young Marine SSgt. slowed me down again this year.  He pooped out after 10 miles and slowed to a crawl.  As you know, Marines encourage one another and stick together; but I gotta recruit some faster Marines  next year.  Maybe put an ad in Leatherneck Magazine and interview them.

This was my 14th year with the Colors and I felt pretty strong.  Running through the thousands cheering loudly with the USA flag raised as high as I can really pumps me up.  As tradition dictates, we pulled off course at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and did a "21 second Salute" to all those brave veterans on the Wall.

-Neil Armstrong, astronaut

“It’s unnatural for people to run around city streets unless they are thieves or victims.  It makes people nervous to see someone running.  I know that when I see someone running on my street, my instincts tell me to let the dog out after him.”

-Mike Royo, newspaper colmnist

“If the Lord had meant for man to run, he’d have given him four legs or at least made him late for a bus.”

-Red Smith, sportswriter
