Lynchburg Roadrunners Newsletter March / April 2000
The Presidents Column
Spring is here HOOYAH! The passing of cold weather and slippery streets has removed all excuse for LRR members to not be well established in their training schedule for the year 2000.
Despite the less than optimum weather, I have observed many hearty souls sticking to the program over the last eight weeks. First, congratulations to all LRR members who participated in VES Arctic 10K . And congratulations to Reed Finlay and his team of organizers for another outstanding event. The weather was great, the field was great, and, from my observations, everyone had a good time. I must admit that the highlight of the race for me was watching Louise Martin, our senior LRR member, running strong up to the finish line. Louise, you are an inspiration for us all.
February 19 witnessed another gathering of the clan as many LRR members participated in the 5th Holiday Lake 50K++. Congratulations to the LRR members who participated in this event, especially Wendy Golden. This was Wendys first ultra and she did a great job. A special congratulations should also be noted for Dr. George Wortley. Dr. George provides the medical coverage for, among other things, the annual Lynchburg 10 Miler, the Mountain Masochist, and many of the Odyssey Adventure Racing adventure races and triathlons. This was also Georges first ultra and he did a great job. George is going to provide the program for the April meeting a presentation on running injuries.
The running calendar for March and April is filling up quickly. Coach Loy will be hosting the Goode What Goes Down Must Come Up 4 mile run and pancake breakfast on March 4. For those who have a taste for the extreme, Odyssey Adventure Racing will have their first Odyssey One Day Adventure Race for the year 2000, on March 11. Many LRR members will be travelling to Virginia Beach later in March for the annual Shamrock Marathon. WSET and the Lynchburg Community Market are hosting the Extreme Festival on April 2. As part of this festival, Wendy Golden has organized another Leukemia Society fund raiser, the Spring Fling 5K and 1 mile childrens fun run. On tax day, April 15, Wendy will host a second Leukemia Society fundraiser, the 5K Dash for Cash. All of these events are sure to be lots of fun and I encourage all LRR members to participate in these worthy causes.
The Jefferson Forest High School girls track and cross-country team had a very successful season last year. They won the Seminole District and Region III championships and placed third in the State AA championship. The authors of the feature article in this newsletter provide an inside look at the thoughts of four members of the team. They are: Ashley Armistead, grade 9; Cate Jackson, grade 9; and twin sisters, Kristin and Shannon Saunders, grade 10. All four girls have been running cross country for two seasons. They were provided an interview format with which to express their thoughts. I think they did a good job. Thanks girls.
Mary Ann Craven reports that membership renewals continue to arrive. As of February 18, there were approximately 100 members in LRR for the year 2000. If you havent sent in your renewal yet, please do. This issue of the Milepost will be the last you receive if you are not on the 2000 roster by April 1. Since RRCA requires all member clubs to update their member lists twice yearly as of January 2000, failing to renew your LRR membership will also terminate your subscription to Footnotes. And we wouldnt want that to happen, would we?! So lets see everyone at Monte Carlos on March 14. Until then,
Walter Rawle

By: Dave Horton - Race Director
Holiday Lake looked like it wasnt going to come off or at least if it did, it was going to be very interesting.
However, in the wee hours of Saturday morning, more rain began to fall...but it stopped just before race time! A full moon could be seen as the runners lined up for the start. The day turned out to be spectacular, although a bit wet and VERY MUDDY! The two stream crossings were going to be interesting!
Everyone is always talking about "Horton Miles. Sometimes that MAY be an accurate term, but when we originally designed the course it was a very accurate 50K course; as witnessed by Mike Harrisons winning time of 3:18. In the third year of the race, we took the long section of paved road and moved it on to the trails. The trail was a bit longer! I and other had guessed the length of each loop to be about one mile longer, thus the actual race length was about 33 miles. Eric Ivey and Eric Ford, who were running their first Holiday Lake race, came down early and biked and measured a loop on Friday. Guess what they came up with ???? 17.5 miles!!! 35 miles for two loops! Oh well, I guess there is something to "Horton Miles" after all!
I expected a very competitive race and, as seen in the race results, I wasnt disappointed!
As many of you know, the date for the Holiday Lake 50K has varied from year to year due to the availability of Holiday Lake 4-H Education Center. This has made it difficult fo planning and preparation. However, it has worked out great from the standpoint that everything is at one place. In the past few years, we have been building trails all over 2,000 acres adjacent to Liberty University known as Liberty Mountain. I have always wanted to have a 50K on Liberty Mountain, but until now, it wasnt feasible. We would hold it either the first or last weekend in April. Because of these two factors, we are considering either replacing the Holiday Lake 50K with the Liberty Mountain 50K. Or, we may have BOTH! Your comments and suggestions are welcomed on this issue.

By Terry Grow
I am a runner,
training each morning before dawn
through the heat,
cold,
rain,
and wind,
building persistence and discipline.
I am a runner,
beginning my journey of daily renewal,
my body moving over the hard earths surface,
muscles over concrete,
contracting and relaxing,
gaining new energy with each step.
I am a runner,
finding solitude as I connect with nature,
a time for spiritual reflection and inner
rejuvenation,
recycling creativity,
content in the security of accomplishing
something difficult today,
that will build strength for tomorrow.
I am a runner,
enduring the obstacles
that mold mental and physical perseverance,
strength,
speed,
endurance,
discovering power just beyond the challenge.
I am a runner,
thriving on the success of my physical
performance,
driving to uncover my potential,
striving to exceed my limitations,
finding confidence as I reach goals
that I once thought impossible.
I am a runner,
waiting anxiously at the start of a race,
contemplating the grueling miles that
lie before me,
a test of speed over distance,
will over resources,
inspired by the hope of improvement,
empowered by the reward of completion.
I am a runner,
alive,
healthy,
my heart beating rhythmically as my lungs fill
with brisk air,
blood pumps through my veins as my feet pound
the pavement,
experiencing abundant life,
for the victory is not in the race
but in the journey.
