Homework Assignments and Solutions for Physics 11x5
Please access homeowork assignments and solutions on Moodle and on
ExpertTA (through Moodle). But please also be familiar with the information
below.
- You will be assigned reading from the textbnook, which can be
supplemented with text resources for better understanding.
- Seven or fewer homework problems will be assigned
each Monday, due Thursday, and each Thursday, due Monday (3-4 homework
problems for each class day). Homework will be done through the online homework and study
service ExpertTA.
- An additional one problem will be assigned for
each class day to be written out by hand and sometimes worked on in class (flipped
class).
- Due to the flipped nature of some time spent in
class solving problems (approximately one hour/week), you will be
assigned up to 30 minutes of video to be watched with each homework
assignment.
- ExpertTA will be used for the online portion of
our homework. Hopefully you will see that it is an excellent tool to
help you learn problem solving. It is required for this class, like any
text. Registration information can be found on the class website
homepage and on Moodle.
- Please note the important learning features of
ExpertTA, and that I do not assign online homework because I am busy (or
lazy). I assign it because it is the best way to learn. Online homework
gives you immediate feedback and the choice to do the problem multiple
times until you get it right. As opposed to written homework which you
only do once, and you do not know if you are right until you get it
graded. The online homework the same problems I would give from the
book. The online homework also does give some hints or feedback, an
added benefit over textbook problems. If you get stuck, and cannot solve
a problem, it is great to try it again, but you should not spend your
time trying to game the system and try many different answers. You need
to try to solve the problem, and not try to get the right answer through
any means possible. If you get stuck on a problem, you should not just
endlessly try to submit different answers, but if you truly feel like
you have exhausted your physics knowledge, you need to come to me to ask
for help. You could do the problems once, like in written homework. Then
you can learn if you are correct immediately and have time to make
corrections, unlike written homework. At that point, you can choose to
use the system to try to help you get the right answer, or you can came
to ask questions. You need to ask questions if you are not getting the
problems correct!
- For the ExpertTA problems, you can re-do them as many times as you
like to get the right answer, up until the start of class on the due-date. Each submission attempt or access to
feedback
results in a small deduction to your score.
- Written homework will come from the textbook.
For written homework, you must always show your work for credit.
Written problems are to be submitted on Moodle
(as a PDF image) before the start of
class; if they are handed in any later than that, the
grade will be penalized. If you do not know how to create a PDF
image of your written work, see this:
https://youtu.be/SJD9t63oA8Q
- Homework solutions to written problems will be posted a week or less
after it is due, in Moodle. You may not turn in homework after solutions
are posted. Online homework can be handed in late up until the time
the next homework is due, and will
be penalized for lateness.
- Daily announcements and homework assignments will be posted on
Moodle.
- In addition to solving problems, you need to take notes, and review your
notes each day before the next class. You need to read the relevant text
before you learn it in class, and need to review all sample problems in the
text. Please see additional notes on
succeeding here.
- Extra credit problems will be available beyond
the regular homework set - extra credit will both improve your homework
score and will offset your exam score if your homework average is higher
than your eaxm average. Extra credit homework sets have the same
due dates as regular homework. Extra credit should not be looked at as
simply a bonus, it is just homework that is not counted against your
grade if you do not do it. You should plan to do as much of the extra
credit as you can in order to succeed in this class.
- Note: As a matter of pedagogy, I do not solve
homework problems during regular class. You should come to me or
go to a tutor with questions about homework outside of class
time.
- Tutors are available through ASC, drop-in sessions for
physics are available multiple times throughout the week. Please check the
drop-in schedule at
https://randolph.mywconline.com/ or make an appointment at this
link.
- Dr. Sheldon is available for you through drop-in office hours, and by appointment, as described
on the syllabus.
